4. Collaboration

Life is sweet! It is especially sweet when you have all of the tools right at your fingertips to complete a project thus making you more productive!

Imagine using a program at school for typing a paper; however, at home you do not have the software. Panic sets in! How are you possibly going to finish your assignment in the time your teacher has given without having the same software at home? Well, with a productivity suite that is FREE and online, you can get your work done in the comfort of your own home, PLUS you can collaborate on work, online, and with others!

Introduction to Google Drive AND Microsoft OneDrive

Both of these are Free online productivity suites of applications that share many of the same capabilities as the ones you use at school. Many schools use Google apps for Education, or Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), while others use Microsoft Office365, or Open Office.

The online productivity suites of programs, Google Drive, Office Online, and Office 365 allow users to create, collaborate and share documents, spreadsheets, presentations, spreadsheets, and calendars. Some suites also provide email accounts and online storage for your files.

A great feature is that your work is saved online (in the Cloud), and you can usually access it at school, at home, or any place you are using various computing devices (laptop, cellphone, tablet, desktop) that have an Internet connection.

With Google Docs and Word Online (or Office 365) you can:

  1. Work on your files anywhere (using an Internet connection) without having the software installed

  2. Upload and download documents in various file formats (.doc, or .pdf)

  3. Have access to all of the revisions your documents have gone through

  4. Share your file(s) with another person who can edit, comment, or view your work simultaneously or at their convenience

  5. Publish your documents for private or public viewing

So let's get started building some word processing skills using these free resources. Select the section that meets your school and home use best! Your teacher may already have a Google or Office365 account set up for you and will need to show you how to login. If your school does not allow you to use one of these, then you can set up your own FREE account at home. * You will need parent permission if you under 13 years old.
