Potential Problems with AI & Generative AI

Fact: Generative AI can create something new based on the data set it is given.

Here is an example of where a data set impacted hiring practices:

Amazon was using an online recruiting tool that used AI to help evaluate applications. AI was used to help "rate" job applications from 1-5 stars. The algorithm was based on the number of resumes submitted for a software engineer over the past 10 years, and the candidates that were hired. The When the hiring system process was examined they found it was biased towards men. Why do you think that happened?

The information (data) that a machine is trained with can bring about:

  • Bias and discrimination
  • Data privacy and security issues because the data is not always accurate or current
  • Misinformation and manipulation
